Some tricky Religious Studies A level essay questions to try this summer

Some of you are already on your summer break and taking a well earned rest, but you might have mock grades in mind as well. I always advise to keep things going a little bit over summer, at least with reading. If you want to impress your teacher when you go back to sixth form in September, you might want to have a couple of really good essay drafts to show them and this can help when discussing with them your UCAS grades.

OCR have been setting exam questions which in some cases refer to a certain named response to a particular argument, rather than a general topic. There is always a mix – but when you are choosing 3 out of 4 questions, you might end up choosing to answer a question of this kind. I will give some examples here for you to try…

Philosophy of Religion (Paper 1)

  1. Is Dawkins right to reject the notion of a disembodied soul? [40]

2. Assess the view that knowledge of the Big Bang removes the need for a cosmological argument for God’s existence. [40]

3. To what extent is Brümmer’s correct to argue that describing God using analogy is no better than the via negativa. [40]

Religious Ethics (Paper 2)

  1. Assess Fromm’s crique of Freud that the conscience is influenced more by external than internal authorities. [40]

2. To what extent is Hume right to argue that we can never derive an ‘ought’ from an ‘is’? [40]

3. Evaluate Milton Friedman’s view that the only responsibility a corporation has is to generate profit. [40]

Developments in Christian Thought (Paper 3)

  1. How far is Wittgenstein right to argue that hesus’ authority was as a teacher of wisdom? [40]

2. Assess Hans Küng’s support for Roman Catholic ethical autonomy. [40]

3. Is Ruether correct in her assessment of traditional Christianity as sexist? [40]
